Founder

Daniel Hartwell started Craftwork Renovations in Portland in 2014 after twelve years working as a finish carpenter and site supervisor for a larger general contractor in the Pearl District. He had spent those years watching good old houses get renovated badly: original fir floors covered with laminate, period mouldings ripped out and replaced with flat stock, sash windows swapped for vinyl units that did not fit the opening. He started Craftwork because he believed the renovation industry in Portland owed older homes more respect than it was giving them.

The first few years were small jobs: a bathroom gut in Sellwood, a kitchen in Ladd's Addition, a basement in St. Johns. Word spread through neighbors and real estate agents who had seen the work. By 2018 we had added a second crew and opened a small woodshop on SE Division where we mill custom trim and reproduce period profiles that are no longer available off the shelf. The woodshop is still there. It is where we make the window casings, cabinet doors, and built-in shelving that show up in most of our projects.

How we restore

Written scope with line-item costs before any Dentil crown moulding reproduced on the shaper, original six-panel doors stripped and refinished, wide-plank fir floors patched with salvaged matching stock
Permit pulled and inspection handled on every Original double-hung sash windows rebuilt in the woodshop, knob-and-tube wiring removed ahead of wall close-up, period wainscoting reproduced in poplar
Closed the last Friday of each month for crew Knotty pine paneling in the study preserved and refinished, original brick fireplace surround repointed, salvaged-fir stair treads sourced and installed
